Name: Flourite, Fai D. (Fay is also used, but I prefer "Fai" because there's usually less confusion with pronunciation(this is also the spelling used in the American "Del Ray" manga translation). Should rhyme with "eye" when spoken.) His actual name is Yuui(Sometimes translated "Yui"), though he doesn't go by it(check history for clarification).
Fandom: Tsubasa: RESERvoir ChRoNiCle (manga)
History link: http://tsubasa.wikia.com/wiki/ Fay_D._Flourite
Age: Canon doesn't state it. He looks to be in his early twenties, but it is stated several times in canon that he is older than he looks and ages slower due to his magic. For the sake of having a number though, I'm going to say he's about 23.
Canon point: In the middle of the "Infinity" story arc. After he's fought in a few matches, but before Ashura-ou wakes up.
Personality: Fai has a rather complicated personality. On first glance, he is friendly, engaging, and easy going. He is always smiling and laughing, even when they're going through rough times in their journey. He uses this lighthearted persona to try to distance himself from others. He is friendly, but doesn't involve himself. He is afraid to be hurt almost as much as he is afraid that others will be hurt by being with him. Everyone that he comes into contact with seems cursed to have terrible things happen to them. Even if it is just coincidence or bad luck, he feels responsible, so he tries to stay as far from others as he can.
During the course of his journeys throughout the manga, this begins to change. Where he would never think of casting magic, not even to save his own life, he does so long as it is in the defense of his friends. Even Kurogane seems surprised by it, but thinks it speaks well for Fai's character that he was starting to change for their sake. Though he doesn't ask for anything in return, Fai begins to care for his traveling companions.
In spite of this, Kurogane is the only one to notice that Fai's personality is not all it seems. He knows the wizard has been lying about some things in his past and when Kurogane mentions it, Fai is utterly crushed. He waits until Kurogane leaves, but he almost has a breakdown just at the mention of his past. It obviously still haunts him and he has heavy feelings of guilt for even being born and wanting to live. Those simple things seem to cause pain to the ones around him and he feels terrible about it, but he can't help wanting them. He's tried to bury his guilt over his brother's death and the deaths of the entire kingdom so he can play along on this journey and work toward reviving his brother, but at the slightest mention, the memories almost overwhelm him.
By his actions, we see that Fai would rather run from his problems than face them. Instead of killing Ashura, the monster that threatened the kingdom, he seals Ashura away and runs. He knows he can't avoid it forever, but he is afraid to face his problem, so he puts it off as long as he can.
He is smart, studious, and has an excellent memory. He read through nearly the entire library in the kingdom of Celes when given the chance and easily memorized most of the spells by what looks to be around the age of 12. He is pleasant and social when he needs to be, but does like to have time to himself once in a while. He gets lonely, though he doesn't admit it, which is one of the reasons he created Chii(an artificial life form modeled after his mother). Not only does she watch over his brother, she also is a companion for him, someone he confides in and looks to for comfort.
Fai is one of the only characters with western habits as well as western looks. He is blond and blue-eyed and cannot use chopsticks for the life of him. He hates sushi. He thinks it is gross and the ginger is nasty.
Mokona also mentions Fai's sleeping habits once. She says Fai is the only person she has seen who sleeps on his stomach, with his face planted down into the pillow(how can he breathe? I have no idea). He doesn't like to sleep near the other characters either, he prefers to be alone. It is, I imagine, reflective of his personality and the way he avoids close contact with people and doesn't like to face things.
In later chapters it is also mentioned that Fai prefers liquor to food. It is also a common trend seen throughout the manga. Likely it is another form of escape for him, so he won't have to think about his painful past. Unfortunately, during the arc I'll be taking him from, he's been turned into a vampire, so drinking doesn't do him much good.
After Kurogane saves his life (though he has to change him into a vampire to do so), Fai's personality begins to change once again. He closes himself off more and more from Syaoran and Kurogane and even goes so far as to drop the nicknames and teasing around them. He becomes more convinced than ever that he needs to stay away from everyone and not allow anyone to get close to him. The only person he seems to talk with much is Sakura, and even then he is distant and still lies to her. His attitude around Kurogane becomes especially cynical. He isn't honest with himself, nor can he forgive Kurogane for saving his life.
Powers/Abilities: There are 2 main types of magic Fai uses. The first is magic by sound. When he aids their escape from Rekord, he uses a whistle to form a barrier around the party. The barrier is able to negate the protective magic that was cast upon the place before-hand. It keeps out the people and creatures who are after them and also makes it possible for Mokona to get them safely to another world.
The second type of magic, the main type he uses, is by written word. Using a staff or his fingers he inscribes words upon the air to cast spells. They looks something like ancient runes and are very powerful. They are more of an energy-type magic, used for battle.
The source of his magic is his blue eyes. Without them he would be magically useless(not to mention, blind!). He's currently missing his left eye, meaning the only eye he has left shortens his lifespan the more he uses magic. (The other eye, the one that was stolen, increases his magic the more he uses it.)
His magic also reacts to his emotions. When they run high or he loses himself, he cannot control it and it often destroys things around him.
Even though Fai tries not to use magic and claims he cannot(totally lying), he still is able to sense magic that is near them. He can detect barriers, trace magic to its source, or get an idea of another's magic power fairly easily. He also knew that the Syaoran(and Sakura for that matter) he originally met on their journey was a clone without being told. When he meets Seishirou(X/1999) in another world, he can sense what the man's power is without trying.
He also must have some talent with magical seals, as he was able to seal Ashura away before he went on his journey and he can also seal objects into people(before they leave for Celes, he seals Kurogane's sword into his hand so he will always be ready to use it). He can even use his magic to cross dimensions, though at first he lies about this ability to the others. This last ability will obviously not be able to work in Vegas though, as he'd just get up and leave and where would the fun be in that?
Since I'm also taking him from the point in time when he's a vampire(though CLAMP's definition of vampire isn't quite the traditional one), he has a few additional abilities. He ages much slower than normal humans, his eye changes to a gold color when he uses his vampiric abilities. He is much faster than an ordinary human, his nails can suddenly shoot out to about a foot in length, they are hard as steel and sharp as razors. He can be out in sunlight without problems, but he does still drink blood and have fangs. Main difference is that the only blood that he can drink that will satisfy his hunger is Kurogane's.
There are also 2 curses placed on Fai, both of which will be sealed and inactive at Vegas for simplicity's sake. The first would cause him to kill the first person he finds with magic more powerful than his own, and the second is only relevant in his own canon universe, but effectively seals his homeworld.
Prose sample:
It'd taken a while, but finally, things had fallen back into a rhythm. When they'd left Tokyo, their entire group battered and bloody, it was hard to believe that things could ever go back to the way they were. And that was just it. They couldn't.
The next few worlds were a blur, at least until they reached Infinity. A world full of underground bloodmatches and secret societies. The goal was the same; find Sakura's feather. The players in this game... nearly all the same. Had things happened differently, he might've welcomed the new Syaoran; joked, made him comfortable, played easily with Sakura, teased Kurogane, but now things were broken. And even if he thought he could fix them, it was better to leave them this way.
He'd found out firsthand what happened when he let people get too close. He was still alive, resentful, and all too aware that every moment that went by, the other Syaoran was using his magic to hurt, kill, and destroy anything that got between him and the next feather of Sakura's memory. It was difficult to believe he wasn't cursed, seeing things fall apart around him as they had.
The hardest part of all though, was that he couldn't just run away. When his brother died pitifully in that tower, he'd run at the first chance. When Ashura's madness drove him to kill an entire kingdom, he'd run from that too, crossing worlds and time and space just to get further from his troubles. But now that his life was literally in Kurogane's hands, there was no simple escape.
And so, instead, there was a rhythm. A pattern. They continued to play as Sakura's chess pieces, win their fights, return home only to ignore one another and avoid eye contact, despite the frigid tension in the air, and wait. Wait until the next battle was announced. Occasionally, he got hungry. Whether he told Kurogane or not, the man always seemed to know if it'd been too long. Those times were the most difficult in their repetitive cycle. He would never initiate it himself; call it stubborn pride or a need to make Kurogane understand just what he'd done in taking up Fai's cursed life, but no matter how thirsty he might be, he would never ask for the man's blood. The scars piled up along Kurogane's wrist, where that same blood was spilled and where Fai drank deeply of the only thing that would satisfy anymore.
He avoided the man's angry stares, met his concern with cutting remarks and deliberate smiles that were nothing but a weak facade. Kurogane saw right through them, but he smiled anyway. He wouldn't let them man know he was right. He would simply continue to hope that Kurogane would regret his decision in time. But until then, they would keep repeating, for as long as it took to win the next prize.
